Glossary:LinkedIn Marketing, Personal Branding and Smart AI Agents

This glossary brings together the terms that come up again and again in work with LinkedIn, personal branding and smart AI agents, with a short, clear definition for each. It is built for executives, marketing teams and anyone working with an agency, so everyone speaks the same language: what dwell time is, how an AI agent differs from automation, what GEO means, and how to measure LinkedIn marketing all the way to the meeting.

LinkedIn marketing today sits at the intersection of three worlds: executive personal branding, the platform's advertising and sales tools, and AI, which is changing both how the work gets done and how people search for information. Each world has its own vocabulary, and much of it is jargon that rarely gets defined.

The definitions here are written from the perspective of companies and B2B professionals, not job seekers. Each definition opens with a direct answer, and each one can be read on its own.

Smart LinkedIn Marketing
Smart LinkedIn marketing is a method that combines personal branding for the leadership team, company branding, smart AI agents that identify each person and tailor every action to them, and measurement of every contact all the way to the meeting. The emphasis is on a defined target audience and personalization, not broad reach.
Personal Branding
Personal branding is the deliberate shaping of how a person is perceived in their field: what they are an expert in, what they think and who they are relevant to. In a business context, executive personal branding on LinkedIn is used to build trust with clients, investors and partners, not to look for a job.
Employer Branding
Employer branding is how a company is perceived as a place to work by current employees and potential candidates. On LinkedIn it is built through the company page, content from employees and managers, and the Life page.
EVP(Employee Value Proposition)
An EVP is the company's value proposition to employees: why it is worth working there rather than somewhere else. It is the foundation of every employer branding message, and it should be specific and grounded in what employees actually experience.
Executive Branding
Executive branding is personal branding tailored to senior leaders: CEOs, partners and VPs whose presence directly affects trust in the company. It requires experience-based content, sensitivity to disclosure issues and a clear approval path.
Thought Leadership(Thought leader content)
Thought leadership is content that expresses a well-founded, original professional point of view, positioning the author as someone who shapes the conversation in their field. The difference from regular content is depth and perspective: not what happened, but what it means and what to do about it.
Company Page
A company page is the organization's official presence on LinkedIn: description, updates, jobs and employees. It represents the institutional side and usually gets less engagement than executives' personal profiles, so it works best alongside them.
Showcase Page(Sub-page)
A Showcase Page is a sub-page linked to the company page, designed for a division, brand or product line with a distinct audience. It makes sense when a company has very different audiences that should not share the same feed.
Life Page(Life tab)
The Life Page is a tab on the company page that showcases the company culture, the people and the experience of working there. It is an employer branding tool aimed mainly at candidates.
Creator Mode(Creator profile setting)
Creator Mode was a LinkedIn profile setting that added tools for content creators, such as displaying key topics and a more prominent Follow button. In 2024 LinkedIn retired it as a separate setting and folded most of the tools into the standard profile.
SSI(Social Selling Index)
SSI is a LinkedIn metric that assesses how actively a user practices social selling: professional branding, finding the right people, engaging with insights and building relationships. It is useful as an internal trend indicator, not as a goal in itself.
Sales Navigator
Sales Navigator is LinkedIn's paid tool for sales and business development professionals, with advanced search, lead and account lists, and alerts about changes at your contacts. It lets you build precise lists by company, role, seniority and region.
InMail
InMail is a LinkedIn message you can send to someone who is not a first-degree connection, provided you have the right subscription or credits. It is useful for targeted outreach, and it only works well when it is personal and short.
Acceptance Rate
Acceptance rate is the ratio of accepted connection requests to all requests sent. It is a key indicator of profile quality, list accuracy and how well the message fits, and it should be measured against the target audience only.
Dwell time(Time on post)
Dwell time is the amount of time a user spends on a post in the feed. According to what LinkedIn has published about its algorithm, dwell time is one of the signals that content is interesting, so content that gets read to the end receives more distribution.
Engagement rate(Engagement ratio)
Engagement rate is the ratio of total comments, likes, shares and clicks to the number of impressions. It shows how much the content sparks a response, but it matters more to check who is engaging, not just how many.
Impressions(Views)
Impressions are the number of times content was displayed on users' screens. It is a reach metric, not an impact metric: a thousand impressions with the right audience are worth more than a hundred thousand with a random one.
LinkedIn Newsletter
A LinkedIn Newsletter is a series of articles people subscribe to, receiving a notification whenever a new issue is published. It is a good tool for regular in-depth content from executives, and it builds a subscriber base within the platform.
LinkedIn Live
LinkedIn Live is a live video broadcast from a profile or company page, with real-time comments. It suits panels, launches and conversations with customers, and it requires preparation and promotion in advance.
Thought Leader Ads
Thought Leader Ads are LinkedIn ads that promote a post from an executive's or employee's personal profile rather than from the company page. They let you boost a post that has already proven itself organically, in front of a targeted audience, with a person's face and voice.
Matched Audiences
Matched Audiences is the umbrella name for custom audiences in LinkedIn advertising: uploading a list of companies or contacts, retargeting website visitors and video viewers, and lookalike audiences. It is the tool that connects a defined target list to your advertising.
Lead Gen Forms
Lead Gen Forms are forms that open inside LinkedIn and are pre-filled from profile data. They make it easier to leave contact details, but they need filtering because they are almost too easy to fill out.
ABM(Account-Based Marketing)
ABM is account-based marketing: instead of targeting a broad audience, you choose a list of target companies and tailor content, advertising and outreach to the people within them. On LinkedIn, ABM combines lists, targeted advertising and personal activity by executives.
ICP(Ideal Customer Profile)
An ICP is the definition of your ideal customer: company type, size, industry, region and the roles that make the decision. It is the basis for building lists, scoring contacts and writing content.
Intent Signals
Intent signals are signs that a company or person is close to a buying decision: hiring for a relevant role, growth, a job change, a tender or a funding round. Smart AI agents spot them so you can reach out at the right time with the right message.
Lead scoring(Lead ranking)
Lead scoring assigns a score to each contact or lead based on how well they fit the ICP and on intent and engagement signals. It helps you decide where to invest first, and it improves when the criteria are defined together with sales.
Employee Advocacy
Employee advocacy is when employees and managers share and create content about the company from their personal profiles. They extend reach far beyond the company page, because people trust people more than they trust a logo.
Ghostwriting
Ghostwriting is writing content for someone who publishes it under their own name. On LinkedIn for executives, it is legitimate when the content is based on the executive's ideas and experience, for example from an interview, and the executive approves every word.
AI Agent
An AI agent is software built on a language model that receives a goal, plans steps, uses tools and information, and carries out a task end to end. Unlike a chatbot that answers, an agent acts, and in well-run marketing it prepares work that a person approves.
Smart AI Agents
Smart AI agents are a team of specialized AI agents working together from the same knowledge base: research, writing, intent signal detection, scoring, community and measurement. They make it possible to carry out far more personalized actions than a human team can manage alone.
Digital Twin
In a business context, a digital twin is an AI model built from the voice, knowledge and positions of an executive or business, which prepares content and answers that sound like them. In its original industrial meaning, a digital twin is a virtual replica of a machine or plant.
AI Brain
An AI brain is an organized, up-to-date knowledge base of the business, which AI tools and smart AI agents draw on instead of general internet knowledge. It includes interviews, documents, positions and boundaries, and it is updated regularly.
LLM(Large Language Model)
An LLM is an AI model trained on vast amounts of text that can understand and generate language. It is the engine behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and most AI agents.
Prompt(AI instruction)
A prompt is the instruction or question you give a language model. Prompt quality affects the result, but in executive content the source material, such as an interview, matters far more than how the instruction is worded.
RAG(Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
RAG is a method in which a language model retrieves relevant passages from a knowledge base before answering and uses them as context. It connects an AI brain to the agents and reduces fabrications, because the answer rests on a source.
Human in the loop(HITL)
Human in the loop is the principle that a person reviews and approves an AI system's output before it goes out into the world. In LinkedIn marketing it protects accuracy, the executive's voice and the platform's terms of service.
GEO(Generative Engine Optimization)
GEO is the optimization of content and digital presence so that AI engines such as ChatGPT and AI Overviews mention and cite you in their answers. It builds on SEO and emphasizes direct answers, consistency, attributed sources and external mentions.
AI Overviews
AI Overviews are summarized answers that Google shows at the top of search results for some queries, with links to sources. They change the importance of ranking first, because some searchers get an answer before they ever reach the links.
llms.txt
llms.txt is a text file at the root of a website that summarizes in plain language what the business does and which pages matter, for language models. It is a proposed standard rather than an official requirement of the engines, so it is a useful addition, not a substitute for good content.
Schema(Structured Data)
Schema is code added to a web page to describe its contents to search engines and AI: an organization, a person, an article, FAQs. It helps engines understand and connect entities, for example a company and its executives.

Frequently asked questions

Executive branding is personal branding tailored to senior leaders whose presence affects the entire company. It requires content grounded in experience and deals, sensitivity to disclosure and a clear approval path. The goal is trust with clients and investors, not career advancement.

Automation runs the same fixed script for everyone, while an AI agent reads the context and adapts its action. An agent can research a contact, score them and draft a personal message. On LinkedIn, automation that takes actions in your account violates the terms of service, so agents prepare and a person approves.

SEO aims for high rankings in search results, while GEO aims to be included and cited within AI engines' answers. GEO builds on an SEO foundation and adds an emphasis on quotable content, consistency and external mentions, including LinkedIn.

The metrics that matter are the ones measured against your target audience: connection acceptance rate, engagement from people on your list, profile views, inquiries and meetings. Impressions and overall engagement rate are useful reach metrics, but they do not show whether you reached the right people.
